Superheated silica-rich material was ejected high into the atmosphere — some estimates suggest it was launched at speeds exceeding 5 kilometres per second — before raining back down to Earth approximately 450 kilometres away, in the region now known as Bohemia, Czech Republic. As these molten droplets and blobs of glass cooled rapidly during their flight and upon landing, they solidified into the distinctive, wrinkled, translucent green glass we now call moldavite. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) classifies moldavite as a tektite — a natural glass formed from terrestrial debris ejected by meteorite impacts.


What Exactly Is a Tektite?

To understand moldavite, it helps to understand the broader category it belongs to. Tektites are a class of naturally occurring glass objects formed when terrestrial rocks are melted and ejected by the heat and pressure of a meteorite impact. The word comes from the Greek tēktos, meaning "molten." They are found in four major strewn fields around the world — regions where tektites from a single impact event are scattered — and moldavite belongs to the Central European strewn field, associated with the Ries impact. Moldavite is typically found in Miocene-age sedimentary deposits — sandy and gravelly layers that were laid down around the same time as the impact. It is extracted through both open-pit mining and alluvial collection (sifting through riverbeds and gravel deposits). The Czech Geological Survey monitors and regulates moldavite extraction, and the Czech government has increasingly tightened mining regulations in recent years to protect remaining deposits.

Museum Grade

The pinnacle of moldavite quality. Museum grade specimens are extraordinarily rare — pieces of such exceptional clarity, colour, size, and surface character that they belong in gemological collections. These are investment-grade stones, and their prices reflect it. Major natural history museums, including the Natural History Museum in London and the Smithsonian Institution, maintain moldavite specimens in their mineralogy collections.

The GIA and independent gemological laboratories can provide certification for high-grade moldavite, which is increasingly important given the prevalence of synthetic and fake moldavite in the market.

Internal features: Under magnification, genuine moldavite typically shows lechatelierite inclusions, flow structures, and bubbles characteristic of its rapid formation. These internal features are difficult to replicate convincingly.

Colour: Genuine moldavite ranges from pale yellow-green to deep forest green. Be cautious of pieces that are unnaturally vivid or perfectly uniform in colour.

Provenance and certification: Purchase from reputable dealers who can provide documentation of origin. The Moldavite Museum and established Czech dealers are considered among the most reliable sources.

Price: If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Genuine moldavite — especially in higher grades — commands significant prices. Suspiciously cheap "moldavite" is almost certainly fake.
